★★★

Director: Woody Allen
Year: 1999

Here’s some Woody Allen films I never saw but am rediscovering after the documentary. It’s a terrific faux-documentary film about this amazing guitar player. Sean Penn is great developing this character and at times I get lost into the character and forget that it’s Spicoli. Plus, there are these amazing shots of him playing the guitar with the camera panning out which Woody described in his documentary. Basically, lots of directors do jump cuts because the actor doesn’t play the guitar. But in this case, he gave Penn guitar lessons for months just so he could film him actually playing the tunes in the film and not be handicapped by how he shot him. Terrific.

The only gripe is the casting of Uma Thurman. Totally wrong for the part. But Samantha Morton is absolutely adorable.
