★★★

Director: Gabriel Axel
Year: 1987

The only reason I wanted to see this is because some guide rated this the best food movie of all time. Beating out my favorite, Eat Drink Man Woman and critic’s favorite Big Night. Anyway, I’m watching this film about 19th century religious sect in rural Denmark and my wife walks in wondering what the hell I’m watching. Because it’s incredibly dated and there’s a lot of religious singing with the cast in period costumes. Anyway, it’s a bit strange and you really need to be in the mood.

As for the food scene, well, it shows up nearly two-thirds into the film. They could have made the entire film just that last third and had a synopsis for the first part telling about the expat from France. But no, then they wouldn’t have won an Oscar for Best Foreign Film, I guess.
