★★★

Director: Alexander Mackendrick
Year: 1957

It’s ironic that I saw this two days before Tony Curtis‘s death. But what started as curiosity of this film’s J.J. Hunsecker as  the basis for J.J. Hudsucker in the brilliant Coen BrothersHudsucker Proxy, turned into a decent noir type film. I always love seeing old New York in films, but I found it difficult to believe that the wealthy lived in Times Square.  Plus the fact that none of the characters were likable. Maybe that was the commentary at the time on newsman, but it really is a dreary place.

At least in the classic noir film The Naked City, it served more as a commentary to the city itself rather than to specific individuals.
