The film is gorgeously shot on a cheap budget, but all of the scenes make sense if you&#8217;re familiar with LA, or rather, even if you&#8217;re not, it wouldn&#8217;t feel like LA. Refn shows us downtown LA from high above (there&#8217;s not really a downtown downtown). He shows the LA River, the beach but only at night when there&#8217;s a lightening storm, the view from the apartment on Echo Park, the only green around for miles. It&#8217;s all so well done and Ryan Gosling is great in it.
