★★★

Director: Andrew Niccol
Year: 2011

This is a film that pisses you off. Only because it’s such a brilliant premise, it’s gorgeously shot and yet the editing, dialogue and acting makes it fall apart. Oh, if someone else would have taken the reigns. And it’s sad, because Andrew Niccol wrote Gattaca, one of my favorite films. That film that a great pace and witty dialogue. Even Truman Show was brilliant. So what happened here?

Basically, there’s only so far you can go playing off of the metaphor of time and money. And he goes overkill. And then there’s the terrible pacing of the film. I kind of wish he would have spent a bit more time on the Time Keeper. He was very interesting and it would have been a bit more different than the similar character he created in Gattaca. It seems a lost opportunity.

Plus I was getting pissed off as the film couldn’t decide if it was Robin Hood or Bonnie and Clyde. Too much homage for a sci-fi film that could have written its own rules. But again, my rating goes for the brilliance of the concept. Such a shame.
