I really wanted to like this movie. It’s visually gorgeous. Stuart Dryburgh did an amazing job. And the fact that this is Ben Stiller’s first film as a director, it’s quite admirable. But the issue I had with it is that it didn’t know what type of film it wanted to be. It felt like it could be another Forest Gump. But that film never went slapstick funny. It tried to stay serious throughout. This one, by comparison, tried to be too much. I think the various ‘fantasies’ and storylines all worked but it’s the level of humor or seriousness that seemed to be at odds. But what this film did very well is solidify as an incredible actress. She really shined.
