Director: Hayao Miyazaki
Year: 1989

I really wanted to like this film since it is a classic Studio Ghibli film, but I just couldn’t get into it. But it might also be because I’m comparing everything Miyazaki’s done since this film came out. His style hasn’t changed much nor his environments of crazy Japanese inspired British towns. But it’s really the storytelling that he’s improved upon. And I just couldn’t get into this story.

The film is about Kiki, who’s a witch. When a witch turns 13, she’s officially in training and has to leave her home in search of new skills and a new town/city where she will reside as witch in residence. She also has her stereotypical black cat, who as a character, was quite hilarious and interesting. Anyway, in this pursuit, I wanted her character to develop more or for us to meet other interesting characters that Miyazaki’s films also has, but it just wasn’t there. But it was great watching his style and knowing just how much it would develop.
