★★★

Director: Woody Allen
Year: 1971

Continuing my viewing of Woody’s back catalog, here’s one of his earliest films and quite an original storytelling style for 1971. It starts off with a bang, with ABC’s Wide World of Sports broadcasting the assassination of a dictator, done in this mockumentary style before there ever was one.

Then when we get to see Woody, I was surprised to see Sylvester Stallone in the film as a thug (officially Thug #1 although he’s uncredited), but it’s one of his first films ever and it was a Woody Allen film at that!

Plus there’s this great Woody line: “I used to steal pornographic books, but they would be in Braille. So I’d just rub the dirty parts against myself.” Classic!
