Never Let Me Go
★★★★★
Director: Mark Romanek
Year: 2010
Originally, I had given this film 4-stars. But the more I think about it, it just gets better and better. Not only is Kazuo Ishiguro‘s story incredible, but the styling, pacing and acting in the film just fits that moody ambiance, and they all just work. I mean, it’s different from the visual beauty of other films, but the melancholy nature of the film just fits the character’s lives that it all blends well together.
Plus, it helped that after the film, I read the Time Magazine article/review which was incredibly written and researched that made me enjoy this film even more. This really is the alternate story to Blade Runner, simply beautiful.

sung i so agree. i loved this film. the themes stayed with me for a few days. i found it strangely uplifting at the end…. and for me it had this blend of japanese/english sensibiiities… a restrained, accepting your fate tone that was heartbreaking and powerful at the same time. i read an interview with romanek and he said he was v. inspired by the japanese philosophy of wabi sabi.. the beauty of the old, imperfect… a patina of sorts.
anyway… also love the subtle typograhic nuance in the film poster. could be detachment.. emotional as well as the physical.. being a donor… not being whole.. a shell.
wabi-sabi in it was amazing. there were no primary colors in the film nor was there anything new, all old. gorgeous subtly.
