★★★★

Director: Guillaume Canet
Year: 2006

This was a recommendation from a client and I gotta say, what a fucked-up film. One, because it was recommended to me without context, I had no idea what this film was about.  And it starts off as this lovely scene in the French countryside and I’m thinking it’ll be a nice romance.  Until murder occurs and then it’s more like The Vanishing.  And then the plot twists yet again with so many layers it got me scratching my head.

Anyway, the film redeemed itself. It actually is a great story; however, I wished the editing and directing would have been more consistent. It felt like 5 different directors worked on this and clipped pieces together: love story, chase scenes, hoodlums, affluents, family turmoils, etc. It was kind of all over the place, but again, it wrapped up very nicely.  I’d recommend this but you have to pay strict attention.
