Director: Doug Liman
Year: 2010

Doug Liman always surprises me.  Here’s a guy who did films like Swingers, Go, The Bourne Identity and The O.C..  All his films feel a bit different from each other.  But this film was so left wing slanted, just not sure how to react.  He should have just done it as a documentary. I’m not saying I don’t agree with tragic events that happened to Valerie Plame, but as a film, I would have loved to have seen both sides of it.

Now, since most of us readers are left wing or anarchists, I’m sure you’re asking, well what’s the other side.  I think he could have gone further into the conflict of protecting Americans, etc. I guess that’s the tough thing about politics, and the film has some great dinner conversations around it, that it’s the one subject people get passionate over and yet most people lack the knowledge to argue. But given that, if he would have gone down a middle road allowing you the viewer to command what is right or wrong, it would have been better for me.

But bar none, Sean Penn‘s performance was incredible.  And his soliloquy at the end is absolutely brilliant. Whoever wrote that dialogue is a genius. Anyway, it’s always interesting to see films made about events that occurred not too long ago.
