True Grit
★★★★★
Creator: Ethan Coen, Joel Coen
Year: 2010
What’s amazing with this film, is that I had no desire to see it, since I’m not a fan of Westerns. I also never saw the original and just the thought of The Dude playing a John Wayne role seemed strange. But hand it to the Coen brothers. I don’t think they could ever make a bad film (although Burn After Reading was pretty bad).
Hailee Steinfeld deserves the Oscar. Her performance was incredible, given that she’s only 14 and this was her first film. Frankly, this film was all about her and less so about Jeff Bridges. And I’m quite surprised that Josh Brolin got his name in the poster, given that he was only in the film for such a short time.
But to have me rate this as a 5-star film and that it’s a Western, you know it’s really good. One of my favorite films of the year.

I was luke warm to this movie when I saw it in the theater, as I love westerns. (For my money, No Country For Old Men is actually a far superior one.)
But I watched it again, and loved it. Totally agree about Hailee Steinfeld. Kim Darby’s portrayal in the first movie made me want to punch and Wayne seemed loaded off his ass, so this is the superior film if you even try to compare the too.
Plus, I like hearing “LaBeef” said so many times.
I’m afraid to think that you’re just sitting at home in your pajamas, eating bon-bons and watching movies all day long. Gotta ask Della about this, but glad you’re catching up on the films. I’ll lend Della some of the 5-star films that you’ll appreciate.
