I gotta say this is one crazy film. If you happen to watch the trailer, you’d expect it to be one of the most romantic films. And then you read the plot that it’s about a married couple going through difficult times. And that’s where the sheer beauty of Derek Cianfrance’s direction comes in. There’s two stories being played out in this film – the current married couple with child and then flashbacks of their courting process. He could have easily just chosen the flashbacks and made a film out of it and it would have probably been one of the most romantic, sappy films ever made and it would have been incredible.  And yet, he decides to layer in the uncomfortable situation of a couple falling out of love.

It’s both painful and beautiful to watch. It took a lot of balls to make and edit a film like this.
