Bus 174
★★★
Creator: José Padilha, Felipe Lacerda
Year: 2002
This documentary is shot and edited so well that it feels like you were actually in Rio when the people on this bus were taken hostage. There’s some amazing narrative as they get to the hostage takers back story, interview family and folks who grew up with him while splicing scenes from the hijacking as it was all happening in real-time, since it became a media circus.
But part of the frustration of the film is just how poorly the police dealt with the situation and, as spectators, we’re left wanting to step in and tell them how they should do their jobs.
